God dammit, Bethesda.  While I understand your urge to protect your product, Steam is the most obtrusive and totalitarian method possible.  Periodic verification, online-only use, mandatory upgrades, etc.  For your next game, give me back SecuROM on my CD versions; leave Steam for the online downloads.  I'm willing to tolerate some DRM if it is unobtrusive, but there are verifiable problems with Steam ''right now'', such as:
* fallout_default.ini is marked as a protected, integral file, meaning it is not possible to edit it for fields of view or otherwise;
* If this file is edited, the program will not run, effectively denying a legitimate user from accessing their real product;
* On startup, it can take anywhere from one to three minutes to wait for Steam to update before the game can be played;
* When/if Valve or Steam go bust, savvy PC users lose Fallout: New Vegas until they hunt down a pirated version, and novice PC users without this knowledge or ability will completely lose it;
* Steam takes both aggregate and personally identifiable information from its users to direct advertisements and articles.
SecuROM, on the other hand, has only a product key issue and possibly an online activation, which ideally is needed only once per installation.
While we're on the subject, give us back more complete games at higher cost, rather than micropayment DLC models... it's getting ridiculous.  I can only hope that eventually console gamers also become upset with the micropayment model so that business will shift back to proper long-term gameplay rather than appealing to those with the attention span of the common goldfish.
