This setting governs the maximum number of actors visible on the player's compass at one time. This applies to both friendly actors (yellow "ticks") and hostile actors (red "ticks"). Setting this number to zero will remove all actors from the player's compass, making the game much more challenging. Effects of increasing the number beyond the default are unknown. The default is 10.
